An Unlikely Hero

An Unlikely Hero

An unlikely hero...
Pictured above is Stubby, a stray who was smuggled into Europe during World War I by a soldier with the 102nd Infantry Regiment.

Stubby quickly earned his place at the unit as he alerted soldiers to gas attacks and even captured a German spy dressed as a U.S. soldier. Stubby would go on to fight in over 17 battles throughout the war.

According to the Smithsonian Institution, his heroics earned him the distinction of being the first dog to receive the rank of "Sergeant" from the United States Armed Forces.
